Malik Al-Imam
is the Sheikh of Islam, the proof of the nation, the Imam of the House of Migration, Abu Abdullah Malik bin Anas bin Malik bin Abi Amir bin Amr bin Al-Harith bin Ghayman bin Khuthail bin Amr bin Al-Harith, and he is Dhu Asbah bin Awf bin Malik bin Zaid bin Shaddad bin Zur’ah, and he is Himyar Al-Asghar Al-Himyari, then Al-Asbahi, Al-Madani, an ally of Banu Taym from Quraish, so they are allies of Uthman, brother of Talha ibn Ubayd Allah, one of the ten.
His mother is Aliyah bint Sharik Al-Azdiyya. His paternal uncles are: Abu Sahl Nafi’, Uwais, Al-Rabi’, and Al-Nadr, the sons of Abu Amir.
Al-Zuhri narrated on the authority of his father Anas, and his two paternal uncles Uwais and Abu Suhayl. He said: The client of the Taymiyyin. Abu Uwais Abdullah narrated from his uncle Ar-Rabi’, and their father was one of the great scholars of the Tabi’in. He took from Uthman and a group.
Malik was born, according to the most correct opinion, in the year ninety-three, the year of the death of Anas, the servant of the Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – and he grew up in a life of protection, luxury and refinement.
He sought knowledge while he was still young, not long after the death of Al-Qasim and Salim. He studied under: Nafi’, Saeed Al-Maqburi, Aamir bin Abdullah bin Al-Zubayr, Ibn Al-Munkadir, Al-Zuhri, Abdullah bin Dinar, and many others whom we will mention in the dictionary. The last of his companions to die was the narrator of “Al-Muwatta’”, Abu Hudhafah Ahmad ibn Ismail Al-Sahmi. He lived eighty years after Malik.
He had performed Hajj in the past and had met Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah. Mus’ab al-Zubayr said: I heard Ibn Abi al-Zubayr say: Malik told us: I saw Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah enter the mosque, take hold of the pomegranate of the pulpit, then face the qiblah.
Ma’n, al-Waqidi, and Muhammad ibn al-Dahhak said: Umm Malik was pregnant with Malik for three years. On the authority of Al-Waqidi, he said: She was pregnant with him for two years.
Malik sought knowledge when he was a few dozen years old, and he qualified to issue fatwas and sat to provide information when he was twenty-one years old. A group of people narrated from him while he was alive, young and fresh. Students of knowledge sought him from all over the world at the end of the reign of Abu Ja`far al-Mansur and after that, and they crowded around him during the caliphate of al-Rashid until he died.
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abd al-Ghani al-Mu’addal informed us, Abd al-Latif ibn Yusuf informed us, Ahmad ibn Ishaq informed us, Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim al-Khatib informed us, they said: Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi informed us, Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Anbari informed us, Abd al-Wahid ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Mahdi informed us, Muhammad ibn Makhlad informed us, Abu Yahya Muhammad ibn Sa`id ibn Ghalib al-`Attar narrated to us, Ibn `Uyaynah narrated to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Abu al-Zubayr, on the authority of Abu Salih, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, conveying it to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, who said: “People will beat the flanks of camels in search of knowledge, but they will not find a scholar more knowledgeable than the scholar of Madinah.”
And with it: To Ibn Makhlad: Layth ibn al-Faraj told us, Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi told us, on the authority of Sufyan, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Abu al-Zubayr, on the authority of Abu Salih, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “A time will come upon the people when they will strike the flanks of camels…,” and he mentioned the hadith. This is a hadith with a clean chain of transmission and a strange text. It was narrated by: several, on the authority of Sufyan ibn Uyaynah.
In another version: “Soon people will strike the armpits of camels seeking knowledge.”
In another version: “From a scholar in Madinah.” In another version: “The most knowledgeable of the scholars of Madinah.”
Al-Muharibi narrated it on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, with a chain of transmission traceable back to the Prophet. It is also narrated on the authority of Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Ansari, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, with a chain of transmission traceable back to the Prophet.
Al-Nasa’i narrated it and said: Ali ibn Ahmad told us, Muhammad ibn Katheer told us, on the authority of Sufyan, on the authority of Abu al-Zinad, on the authority of Abu Salih, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “They strike the flanks of camels, but they do not find a scholar more knowledgeable than the scholar of Madinah.” Al-Nasa’i said: This is wrong. The correct version is: on the authority of Abu al-Zubayr, on the authority of Abu Salih.
Ma’n ibn ‘Isa, on the authority of Abu al-Mundhir Zuhair al-Tamimi, said: Ubaydullah ibn ‘Umar said, on the authority of Sa’id ibn Abi Hind, on the authority of Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, who said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “People will go out from the East and the West in search of knowledge, but they will not find a scholar more knowledgeable than the scholar of Madinah.”
It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Uyaynah, who said: I used to say: He is Saeed bin Al-Musayyab, until I said: In his time there were Sulayman bin Yasar, Salim bin Abdullah, and others. Then today I say: He is Malik, and there is no one like him left in Madinah.
Judge Iyad said: This is the correct version on the authority of Sufyan. It was narrated from him by Ibn Mahdi, Ibn Ma’in, Dhu’ayb ibn ‘Imamah, Ibn al-Madini, al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar, and Ishaq ibn Abi Isra’il. All of them heard Sufyan interpret it as Malik, or say: “I think it,” or “I reckon it,” or “I see it,” or they used to see it.
Abu Al-Mughira Al-Makhzoumi said that its meaning is: As long as the Muslims seek knowledge, they will not find anyone more knowledgeable than a scholar in Madinah. So this is Saeed bin Al-Musayyab, then after him whoever is from the sheikhs of Malik, then Malik, then whoever came after him with his knowledge, and he was the most knowledgeable of his companions.
I said: The scholar of Madinah in his time after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his two companions was Zayd ibn Thabit, Aisha, then Ibn Umar, then Saeed ibn al-Musayyib, then al-Zuhri, then Ubaydullah ibn Umar, then Malik.
And on the authority of Ibn Uyaynah, he said: Malik was the scholar of the people of Hijaz, and he was the authority of his time.
Al-Shafi’i said – and he was truthful and righteous: When scholars are mentioned, Malik is the star.
Az-Zubayr ibn Bakkar said in a hadith: “People will strike the flanks of camels…” Whenever Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated this during the lifetime of Malik, he would say: I think he is Malik. He remained like that for a while, then he returned and said: I think he is ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-‘Umari the ascetic.
Ibn Abd al-Barr and more than one other said: Al-Umari is not one of those who can reach Malik in knowledge and jurisprudence, even if he is a noble, master, and worshipper.
Ahmad ibn Abi Khaithamah said: Mus`ab told us, he said: Sufyan told us: We see this hadith as being Malik, and Sufyan used to ask me about the news of Malik.
I said: This Umari had good knowledge, understanding, and virtue. He was a speaker of the truth, a leader of custom, and isolated from the people. When he was alone with Malik, he would urge him to practice asceticism, detachment, and isolation. May God have mercy on them both.
Chapter: There was no scholar in Medina after the Successors who resembled Malik in knowledge, jurisprudence, majesty, and memorization. After the Companions, there were in it the likes of Saeed bin Al-Musayyib, the seven jurists, Al-Qasim, Salim, Ikrimah, Nafi’, and their generation, then Zaid bin Aslam, Ibn Shihab, Abu Al-Zinad, and Yahya bin Saeed. And Safwan bin Sulaym, and Rabi’ah bin Abi Abd al-Rahman, and their generation, and when they died, the mention of Malik became famous there, and Ibn Abi Dhi’b, and Abd al-Aziz bin al-Majshun, and Sulayman bin Bilal, and Fulayh bin Sulayman, and al-Darawardi, and their peers, so Malik was the most prominent among them in general, and the one to whom camels would be driven from all directions – may God have mercy on him. Allah – the Most High.
I have come across one of his most important works, “Muwatta’” by Abu Mus’ab. On the way, I received a leave, and I came across from his lofty hadiths, by connection, forty hadiths from the hundred Sharhiyyah, a part of Baybi, a part of Baniyasi, and the parts of Muhamiliyyat. Among them: Abu al-Ma’ali Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani informed us, he said: Abu al-Mahasin Muhammad ibn Hibat Allah ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Dinawari informed us in Baghdad in the year six hundred and twenty, my uncle Abu Bakr informed us. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz in the year five hundred and thirty-nine, Asim ibn al-Hasan informed us, Abd al-Wahid ibn Muhammad al-Farisi informed us, al-Husayn ibn Ismail al-Qadi informed us, Ahmad ibn Ismail al-Madani informed us, Malik informed us, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Ansari, on the authority of Abu Yunus, the freed slave of Aisha, on the authority of Aisha that a man said: To the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), while he was standing at the door and I was hearing: O Messenger of Allah, I wake up in a state of ritual impurity and I want to fast, so should I take a bath and fast that day? He said: “And I wake up in a state of ritual impurity and I want to fast, so I take a bath and fast that day.” The man said to him: O Messenger of Allah! You are not like us. Allah has forgiven you your past and future sins. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, became angry and said: “By Allah, I hope that I am the most fearful of Allah among you and the most knowledgeable of what I should fear.” 4
This is an authentic hadith. Narrated by: Abu Dawud, on the authority of Al-Qa’nabi, on the authority of Malik. Al-Nasa’i narrated it in his “Musnad Malik” on the authority of Muhammad ibn Salamah, on the authority of Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim al-Faqih, on the authority of Malik.
